Frequently Asked Questions

  • First off, welcome! You’ll need to either buy a day pass or membership to climb. Your first visit will include a orientation to explain the gym rules and how all the safety equipment works. After the orientation, you are free to climb any walls that are available on that day.

If you’d prefer to have an instructor present the entire time, we’d recommend either our Get into Climbing lesson which will set you up for independent climbing in the gym, or a Guided Climb where our staff will take care of all the safety stuff and you can just focus on the fun!

Everyone in the facility will need a signed waiver, even if they are just watching. Those under 18 must have their waiver filled out and signed by a parent or court-appointed guardian. Waivers can be filled out in advance at this link.

  • Junction memberships do not include J2 access by default. You will need to purchase a Day Pass or 10 Punch Pass, or upgrade your membership to include dual gym access. Please read our Dual Membership FAQ for more details.

  • We have about 100 routes and 55 boulder problems, with plenty of options for climbers of all abilities and backgrounds. Most of our route climbs can be done on either top rope or lead, with our cave section being lead-only. Our boulder section follows a circuit-based system for difficulty levels - more on that here.

Please note that every climber must receive an orientation and gym tour on their first visit, regardless of prior experience.

Belay tests are free. Top Rope tests can be done without a booking, just let the staff know on arrival and we will give you a time estimate. We appreciate advance notice for lead tests; please email bookings@junctionclimbing.com or call ahead and speak with a manager to check tester availability. Lead climbers must bring their own rope and Petzl Grigri.

  • Children are welcome to climb, however there are limited climbs for very young kids. Please note our minimum weight requirement of 35lbs (16kg).

We also require active supervision for kids age 12 and under - staff are not available to watch your children. Supervisors must be age 16 or older. We recommend one supervising adult for every three children. If you’d prefer to not supervise, contact us to book a Guided Climb and we can schedule a dedicated instructor to be with your group. Guided Climb bookings require at least one week notice.

Minors under 18 must also have their waiver filled out and signed by a parent or court-appointed guardian. You cannot sign a waiver for a child that is not yours - no exceptions! Participants without a valid waiver will not be able to enter the climbing area, even if they are just watching. Waivers can be filled out online at this link.

  • We recommend that kids be approximately 5 and older before trying our gym. Climbers must also be a minimum of 35 lbs (16 kg) and a maximum of 275 lbs (125 kg) to use our autobelays. Everything else is dependent on the climber's attitude and abilities.

Regardless of age, everyone entering the climbing area must complete a waiver, even if they are not climbing.

  • No - we have the gear options available to rent or buy! If you're climbing routes (roped climbs), you will need a climbing harness. Rock climbing shoes are required for climbers. We don't allow climbing barefoot or in running/street shoes of any kind. For safety and hygiene reasons, equipment cannot be shared between climbers.

Wear comfortable clothing, ideally athletic wear. Skirts and dresses are not permitted. Tops must be worn by all climbers. You will need to empty your pockets and take off any rings or jewelry before climbing.

  • You certainly can! Our pro shop is stocked with harnesses, shoes, chalk, chalk bags, and other accessories from great brands. We also carry our own line of signature clothing.

Please do not purchase safety equipment (harness, carabiners, belaying devices etc.) second hand including facebook Marketplace or from Amazon. Soft materials have an expiry of 10 years and must be certified by UIAA. These safety measures cannot be guaranteed when buying second hand or from Amazon. Please consider buying at our Pro shop, MEC, Atmosphere.

  • All of our climbs are colour-coded and graded according to difficulty level. This will be explained in our safety orientation. Our boulder section follows a circuit-based system for difficulty levels - more on that here.

  • Absolutely not - no one is ever forced to climb to the top. We understand everyone has different levels of ability and comfort. You can come down at any time if you feel uneasy or anxious.

  • Possibly! Most disabilities can be accommodated. Please contact us to discuss your options. Junction has partnered with Rise Above Adaptive Climbing a non-profit organization run by rock climbers with disabilities, for climbers of all ages and experience levels.
