Tips For Your First Time Climbing

Climbing is an adventurous physical activity that involves a combination of physical and mental strength. If you’re new to the activity, you might feel intimidated and unsure of where to start. Here at Junction Climbing Centre, we offer climbing lessons, events, and more. Here are some tips to help make your first time climbing a success.

Consider Climbing Lessons

Your first visit will include a orientation to explain the gym rules and how all the safety equipment works. After the orientation, you’re free to climb - but many first time climbers find climbing lessons to be useful. In our Get Into Climbing lessons, climbers learn the fundamentals of the sport, including safety protocols, climbing techniques, and gear selection. We also offer Guided Climbs where our staff will ensure you are climbing safely. Professional instructors can teach you how to use climbing gear, how to rest and conserve energy on the wall, and navigate tricky routes or movements. Book climbing lessons with us today.

Pick The Right Gear

Before you embark on your climbing adventure, ensure you have the right climbing gear. If you're climbing routes, you'll need a climbing harness and rock climbing shoes to participate (you can rent or buy them from us!). Note that we don't allow climbing barefoot or in running/street shoes of any kind. Wear comfortable clothing, such as athletic wear. Please remove any rings, jewelry, and empty your pockets before climbing.

Stay Focused And Relaxed

Focus on your breath and use slow, controlled movements. Don't rush or panic. Take deep breaths, relax, and give yourself time to adjust to the climb. Remember, it’s a physical and mental challenge, and it’s OK to take breaks.

Build Strength And Flexibility

You don't need to have any experience with physical exercise but things like stretching, flexibility and lower body strength can only help you in your climbing journey. Engage in exercises that can help develop your core strength, such as planks, squats, and lunges. Flexibility exercises, such as yoga, can also help you gain flexibility and increase your range of motion.
